BACKGROUND OF THE COMMISSIONS
In 1959, the governors of Sonora and Arizona, Álvaro Obregón Tapia and Paul J. Fannin, respectively, called upon all sectors to stimulate the relationship and overall development of both states. They envisioned creating the Arizona-México West Coast Trade Commission and the Sonora-Arizona Committee for Economic and Social Promotion.
This Committee is now the Sonora - United States Commission, whose mission is to strengthen and develop socio-economic relations within the Sonora-Arizona megaregion, projecting it integrally on the international stage.
As for the Arizona-México West Coast Trade Commission, after being reorganized and restructured, in 1972 Arizona Governor Jack Williams announced the Arizona-México Commission, appointing its board of directors, comprised of an Executive Committee, active members, and general membership. This Commission was established under the laws of the State of Arizona and has operated under this model to this day.
Regarding the Sonora-Arizona Committee for Economic and Social Promotion, it evolved into the Sonora-Arizona Commission for many years. This remained the case until October 2023, when the official relaunch of the Sonora - United States Commission took place under the leadership of its president, Governor Dr. Alfonso Durazo Montaño.
ABOUT THE 2024 PLENARY MEETING
The Sonora - United States Commission is a space for convergence and collaboration aimed at progress between two states, two cultures, and one shared goal: building a future of shared prosperity. Its mission is to strengthen and develop socio-economic relations between Sonora and Arizona, positioning itself internationally as a fully integrated megaregion.
In this context, clean energy, advanced manufacturing technology, automation, quality education, well-being, talent development, security, water, and strategic infrastructure are just some of the key issues that connect and complement us.
Additionally, taking advantage of Sonora’s strategic location, its rich natural resources, and the rising talent of its youth are key factors that will further strengthen the enduring and fruitful alliance between Sonora and Arizona.
